چکیده

In this paper we evaluate a model for temporal data utilizing the benefits of object-relational database systems (ORDBS). In particular we show how attribute timestamping can be efficiently implemented in state-of-theart ORDBS. The attribute timestamping concept is based on introducing user-specific types for temporal versions of datatypes. Moreover on the physical level we make use of user-defined index structures; in particular adapted spatial indexes based on generalized search trees are applied. These index structures greatly improve performance of important operators on both valid and bitemporal datatypes and show the effectiveness of this approach.

M Modeling and Querying Temporal Data

Databases in general store current data. However, the capability to maintain temporal data is a crucial requirement for many organizations and provides the base for organizational intelligence. A temporal database has a time dimension and maintains time-varying data (i.e., past, present, and future data). In this article, we focus on the relational data model and address the subtle issues in mo...

Natural and Efficient Modeling of Temporal Information with Object-Relational Databases

In this article we present a model for temporal data utilizing the benefits of object-relational database systems (ORDBS). In particular we show how attribute timestamping can be used for natural modeling of object attributes on the conceptual level and how this concept can be simply and efficiently implemented in state-of-the-art ORDBS. The attribute timestamping concept is based on introducin...

TeXOR: Temporal XML Database on an Object-Relational Database System

Storage costs are rapidly decreasing, making it feasible to store larger amounts of data in databases. This also makes it possible to store previous versions of data in the databases, instead of only keeping the last version. Recently, the amount of data available in XML has been rapidly increasing. In this paper, we describe TeXOR, a temporal XML database system built on top of an object-relat...

Querying Multiple Temporal Granularity Data

Managing and querying information with varying temporal granularities is an important problem in databases. Although there is a substantial body of work on temporal granularities for the relational data model [11], a comprehensive framework is lacking for the object-oriented paradigm. To the best of our knowledge, a formal treatment of temporal queries with multiple granularities has not been c...

Approximating Retrieval Unit for Un-structured Querying in Relational Databases

In recent years, there has been a significant interest in enabling keyword search capability, which is un-structured querying, for relational databases. Existing approaches return a set of tuples joined together as a retrieval unit. However, the joined tuples possibly involve data of the irrelevant or lessinteresting attributes for query keywords when the keywords are matched in multiple relati...
